I want to say that my journey begun back in 2006, but the truth is that it probably begun much earlier in life, when as a young girl, I developed a love for dance and a dream that one day I would learn one form or another. Then in my late teens the sound of distant shores and adventures called my name and so I promptly traded the comforts of my childhood home to spend the following years travelling the world and experiencing all the beauty and excitement it had to offer and growing as a person.
Eventually I returned home where I struggled to find a role that bought me the same level of joy and passion that I had become accustomed to whilst travelling and I found myself moving from job to job searching for the ‘right role’ for me but always falling short. It was at this time that I decided to take my very first Salsa class and what happened next changed my life in a way that I could never have expected. That was the day that I found what I had been searching for, that was the day I became a fully-fledged Salsa-holic!
By 2007, I had joined a dance team, was performing at events as had begun teaching classes. It wasn’t too long after that a role become available at a dance studio and my career in dance really took on a new direction. After several years of pouring every bit of my heart and soul into the school the time came for me to make a tough decision. Whilst it is a well-known fact that a career in dancing comes with many sacrifices (all of which I had grown used to), my emotional and physical state had begun to be impacted by my workload, and so with great sadness I made the very difficult decision to leave my role and make some positive changes in my life.
Within weeks I was approached to join another top Sydney dance school to manage their studios. I was still running my own private classes on a part time basis where my passion had become helping people who were overcoming their own challenges transform themselves through dance like a caterpillar that transforms into a beautiful butterfly. At the same time, my greater vision was evolving. I knew that I wanted to do and be part of something different and so I began to refine my vision of bringing high level dancers in various styles to Sydney to help develop and grow our community.
In April 2015, I gave up my role at the school to pursue my vision and shortly after I discovered that a studio space I had taught many classes was available. Even though I had very little money and no business plan I really wanted to secure the space. Then the next day whilst at a seminar, the very famous speaker got to the point in his lecture where he began speaking about making decisions and taking immediate action. At that very moment I felt as though he was talking directly to me, as if the other 200 people in the room weren’t even there. And so, without hesitation I made the boldest move I have ever made. I made my decision and took immediate action and within 1 week I had signed a 3-year lease on our space and Connection Studios Sydney was born.
Connection Studios has now been completely transformed into 8 bright and clean studio spaces and I am absolutely delighted that the pursuit of my own personal vision and dreams has allowed all artists (both professional or amateur) to be part of our community, have a place that they can call home and pursue their dreams on their own terms.
